History: Once widely used in Germany to hunt bears and wild pigs, the Weimaraner became prized in more recent times as a gundog and retriever of small game, such as waterfowl. Description: This superb hunting dog has an athletic, well-proportioned body. The sleek, close-fitting coat comes in silver-gray to mouse shades, often lighter on the head and ears. The striking eyes are blue-gray or amber. The tail is usually docked. Temperament: Strong-willed and intelligent, the Weimaraner is happiest when occupied with tasks that engage its mind. It needs firm, thorough training to control its tendency to dominated and be aggressive. It makes a great watchdog and is good with children. Care: The coat does not shed much and only needs brushing once a week. A rub with a chamois will make it gleam. Dry shampoo occasionally and bathe with mild soap when necessary. Inspect the feet and mouth for damage after work or exercise sessions. Keep the nails trimmed. The Weimaraner has enormous stamina. It needs opportunities to run free and lots of regular exercise. As it is prone to bloat, feed it two or three small meals a day. In addition to bloat, this generally hardy breed can suffer from hip dysplasia and various skin ailments. It is also prone to sunburn on the nose.
