Dr. Nancy Altena:
I am the owner and veterinarian at Companions Animal Hospital. I grew up in Jamestown, North Dakota and still travel back there as often as possible to see my family. After graduating from high school I attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN where I majored in biology. Concordia was a great stepping stone to veterinary school. My education continued at the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. While in veterinary school I also had the wonderful opportunity of playing on a women's hockey team. I coached hockey while living in Moorhead but this was my first opportunity to play competitively. What a terrific experience! I met my husband Eric through the hockey program in Fort Collins. After finishing veterinary school I did a 12 month internship at a 24 hour emergency practice in Southfield, MI. During my time in Michigan I saw a lot of interesting and difficult cases and honed the skills I learned at CSU. Eric had a great job opportunity offered to him as a Fisheries Biologist for Texas Parks and Wildlife and off we went. We spent 5 years in Canyon, TX. I worked at a 3-doctor-practice in Amarillo during this time. Eric and I spent time fishing, and starting an in-line hockey league (no ice!!). Our last year in Texas we helped get ice hockey to Amarillo. Best of all, our son Braden was born during that last year. We decided to move closer to family and with the help of my brother, Bill, in St. Cloud, found this practice for sale. I am now in the process of realizing my biggest professional dream of being involved with a progressive, compassionate and state of the art veterinary hospital. We have a terrific team and I would love for you to come in and see us. Minnesota has been a wonderful experience as a veterinarian, for fishing and playing hockey! |
