The Importance of Annual Health Exams
The key to a healthy pet is the early detection and prevention of disease. Many of the technologies and procedures in human medicine are now available to pets. There are many conditions that if diagnosed early, can be completely reversed or controlled for extended periods of time. At
The goal of the annual health exam is to establish what is considered “normal” for your pet. Year to year, we are better able to keep track of changes and take preventative steps as appropriate. In short, the annual exam becomes your pet’s health history.
There are two components to the health exam. First, the exam includes a comprehensive physical, which looks at all aspects of your pet’s health. General attitude, respiration, eyes and ears, muscle tone and movement, and heart are among the areas examined. Included also are discussions of your pet’s body weight and nutrition, dental care, and behavior issues. The doctor will review our vaccination program as recommended for your individual pet and go over other health maintenance topics such as flea control, intestinal parasite control and heartworm preventative.
Second, laboratory tests, through a blood and urine sample, help determine the health and function of your pet’s internal organs. A chemistry blood panel surveys many organs, such as the kidneys and liver, to make sure they are working normally. A complete blood count (CBC) tests for anemia, infection, inflammation and healthiness of blood cells. Thyroid function tests are useful in diagnosing increased or decreased functions of the thyroid gland. Finally, a urinalysis assesses the health and function of the urinary system and is especially important in older animals to help in early detection of kidney disease.
Just as you and your family go to the doctor for your annual physical, so should your faithful companions. The health care team at
