Employees of the Month!

Mendi Maguire and Sandy Michienzi

Mendi grew up Wentland Wyoming and moved to Minnesota when she was twelve years old.  She attended Sauk rapids High school and after graduation attended Technical College and SCSU where she earned an Applies Science in Computer Technology.  She discovered that computers did not provide her with her ideal career.  Mendi started working at Companions in 1996 where she began as a kennel attendant.  Today she is one of our Veterinary Nurses.  The staff appreciates Mendi’s great sense of humor and hard work.

When Mendi is not working you may find her with her son Adam, or spending time with her significant other Bill.  She also enjoys participating in Boy scouts, riding her scooter, going camping, walks with her dog, and landscaping.  Her motto is “If you’re going to do it do it big!”

Mendi’s favorite thing about working here is the recognition she gets from clients and seeing the tails wag!

Sandra says her animal obsession started early in life, as a child she drove her parents crazy by bringing stray animals home.   Her early love of animals never wavered and when she was ready to work it seemed only natural that she pursued a career with her four legged friends.  One of Sandra’s first jobs was at a discount store with a fish and small animal department.  She always tried to find occupations where she felt she was making a difference in an animals’ life.  Sandra’s past jobs range from managing the cities pound to running a pet store.  Once she strayed from animals and tried working as a paraprofessional helping special needs children, she found it rewarding but missed her animal interactions.

Sandra explained that the reason she came to Companions was, “I heard it had a wonderful reputation for really, truly caring for their patients and owners.  It had been my dream of mine to work in a Veterinary Hospital and Companions gave me the opportunity to fulfill that dream.”

When Sandra is not working you may find her singing.  She is the lead singer for The Bad Animals which is a tribute band to Heart.    Spending time with her husband who also plays in the band is another favorite pastime.  Her other hobbies are mostly animal related seeing that she has her own mini-zoo complete with dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, and fish.  Sandra has two children and four stepchildren.

The staff at Companions is very thankful that such a hard working and great person such as Sandra has come to work with us.  Congratulations on being voted employee of the month.

Hello! My name is Grayson and I am a special kitty looking for a “hospice care” type of home.  I am a senior neutered male cat who was brought into CAH as a stray.  The staff here has cleaned my teeth and tested me for heartworm disease, feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus.  I have also been vaccinated for rabies and distemper.  Unfortunately I tested positive for heartworm and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV).  Because of my FIV positive status I need to be the only cat in the family.  I will also need to receive a monthly heartworm preventative as this is the only treatment available for cats that are heartworm positive. During my stay here they also discovered that I have kidney problems and will require a special type of prescription food as well as weekly fluids for the rest of my life.  CAH is willing to provide the weekly fluids at no charge to my new owner but my new owner would have to be willing to purchase the prescription food I require.

I love being close to people although I am not necessarily a lap cat.  My health is currently good considering my diagnosis but this could change at some point. If you have room in your home and heart for a special kitty requiring a special type of home, have questions, or might be interested in adopting me just ask one of the team members.

FIV is a disease in cats that is normally transmitted through bite wounds.  Cats that have it will generally go through a prolonged period of viral dormancy before they become ill.  This incubation period may last as long as six years.  There are no treatments available for FIV.  However, the disease state can sometimes be treated with antibiotics or with drugs to stimulate the immune restoring the cat to relatively good health.  The virus is still active, however, and may become active at a later date
